Drink: Coconut Water

VitaKidsSummer is the perfect time to jump on the coconut water bandwagon if you haven’t already. Packed full of electrolytes, coconut water claims to be one of the most hydrating beverages out there and is perfect for the long dog days of summer where staying hydrated is key.

But I’m not going to lie. Though I’m crazy for the mighty coconut and its multitude of uses, when I first sampled coconut water a few years ago I found it quite unpalatable. It’s one of those things you either love or loathe. So when Vita Coco came out with their range of flavoured coconut water, I had to try it. Surprisingly, even though you can still taste the undertones of the plain version, the natural fruit flavour masks it just enough to make it drinkable and even enjoyable. The range comes in large tetra packs and kid-friendly juice box sizes in the same flavours. There is no added sugar or artificial flavourings.

Benefits of coconut water

Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside young green coconuts. It’s full of potassium, antioxidants, cytokinins and natural sugars. It is the perfect hydrator after exercising or a night out. It’s also a great option if your child needs some thirst quenching after a stomach bug or fever—a better and natural alternative to mainstream sports drinks for the whole family.

In addition to hydration, coconut water aids in digestion, lowers blood pressure and is great for your skin.

How to drink it

I find it’s best to drink coconut water as COLD as possible. On our quest to incorporate more of this into our diet, we found some great smoothie recipes as well as some fun cocktails—the hope is that the coconut water counteracts the dehydrating effects of the alcohol. One can always hope. . .
