Tandy Kerry has always been an avid photographer but it was the birth of her little boy Jackson that really took her passion to the next level. Her background is in graphic design, advertising and branding and packaging. She has always been trigger happy with a camera so the transition from designer to photographer was an easy one. As a new mum, she knows how quickly babies grow and how important it is to record each precious milestone. She loves to capture the unique personality and essence of every little person she have the privilege of photographing.
How long have you been a photographer?
I studied graphic design and photography in 1998 and haven’t really put my camera down since then. Tandykerry photography started in March 2010, so I’ve been shooting little babies and children on a professional level since then.
What got you into photography?
It was a subject I took at art college and as my parents didn’t take that many photographs during my childhood, I think I was determined to capture every happy memory of my life going forward. But more recently it was the birth of my little boy that inspired me to go into baby/child photography.
Which photographer do you look up to and why?
I love “captured by Carrie” as her newborn photography is absolutely beautiful and her colour treatment is perfect. I would love to do one of her famous hanging shots one day! If any of my clients are brave enough to attempt it!
What do you prefer – film or digital?
I loved shooting with film and loved the hand-developing process but I’ve grown to love digital and think it would be hard to go back to film…even-though I swore I’d never go digital!
My first camera – a Canon AE1 – was an old film camera which I still own and still use from time to time. My favourite part of photography was the developing. Watching my photographs in the dark room appear right in front of me was always so exciting and even now, digital “developing” is still my favourite part of the process.
What should your customers expect during a session?
A Tandykerry classic package lasts 2-3 hours. In that time I’ll photograph the little one in their own environment playing with their own toys in their bedroom or if the weather is nice outside in the garden. As I’m also a wedding photographer, I have the same approach to my baby/child photography sessions. I photograph a lot of detail from favourite toys, 12 week scans, room detail etc, all of which forms part of the story that gets presented in a book.
Do you have any tips for capturing the perfect picture?
In my experience children are happiest in their own homes or out in the park (somewhere fun). If their tummies are full and they’ve had a little sleep then I usually get good results! Snacks are also a good way of rewarding those beautiful big smiles. Also, just playing with them and having fun!
