WLM’s Top 20 Portrait Photographers: Kerry Harrison

Kerry is a food-loving, eco-conscious, mummy-of-two photographer, specialising in creative photography that captures your life. Kerry launched KERRYJ PHOTOGRAPHY just over a year ago and it has been an amazing journey so far, “I have met some fantastic children and adults along the way and I view it as a privilege to be able to capture portraits for families which reflect their uniqueness” says Kerry.  Her action filled photographs showcase show families in their element – laughing, smiling and having fun together.

How long have you been a photographer?
I first studied photography during my Graphic Design degree sixteen years ago and have been hooked ever since! Of course, all those years ago, I learnt using black and white film, a darkroom and a second-hand old manual SLR camera. But learning this way gave me such a good foundation, as I could never afford (as a student) to waste a single shot! It also embedded my appreciation of the purity of black and white photography, which I still love.

What got you into photography?
After studying it during my degree, I then worked in the creative design industry where powerful imagery is vital. After becoming a mum myself, I quickly became dissatisfied with all the uninspiring family and children’s photography that was on offer and knew that I could create something more than just another photo with a white background and a static pose! I had a vision for creating portraits which actually told a story and held a memory for each family.

Which photographer do you look up to and why?
There are so many it is almost impossible to choose one. I look up to photographers who are striving to do something different. I especially love the work of Deb Schwedhelm- she creates unique and compelling images that draw you in.

What do you prefer – film or digital?
I love them both, for different reasons. However, I use digital for my business.

What should your customers expect during a session?
Fun! A relaxed, unhurried and unstressful experience where we chat, laugh a lot, your children have the freedom to be themselves and I capture it all in beautiful, bespoke portraits for you. I am passionate about not only the photography but creating an experience that is memorable and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Do you have any tips for capturing the perfect picture?
Different ages of children require very different approaches but overall, you are far better to capture your children by interacting with them during activities they love to do, rather than dictating to them that they should ‘sit still and smile!’ – it completely stifles their natural and very wonderful energy.
