Lighten Up: God’s Own Junkyard, Walthamstow

Ready to trip the light fantastic? Be prepared for some open-mouthed wonder on a visit to this little studio gallery. Tucked away on a dull-looking trading estate in Walthamstow, East London, is one of the brightest, most colourful galleries we’ve ever witnessed. God’s Own Junkyard (GOJ) is a small gallery completely full from ceiling to floor with neon artworks, LED vintage and retro signage, and all manner of amazing lights. If this doesn’t cheer you up on a rainy summer’s day we don’t know what will!

The ‘Junkyard’ is the studio of the late Chris Bracey (who sadly died of prostate cancer in 2014) who custom-made neon artworks using salvaged lights, old film props, discarded circus and fairground signage, music promo pieces and more. GOJ has a cult following in London and Los Angeles and many famous clients. The workshop continues Bracey’s legacy selling existing and new artworks, as well as hiring pieces for parties and film shoots.

The gallery space in Walthamstow displays all manner of original and remade pieces. A small handful are a little on the controversial or risqué side, so do be aware when visiting with children. However, I would wholeheartedly recommend that little ones have a look—what’s not to love about glowing rainbows, circus lights and giant glitter balls?! Babes in arms (and any toddlers that can’t yet read) are perfect visitors, a gentle stroll around will definitely stimulate their senses as they’re dazzled by light and colour.

Make sure you stop for a drink in their Rolling Scones Café—best enjoyed (if weather permits) in their small courtyard garden with pretty water feature and giant robot made of salvaged rubbish. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and local craft beers are on offer alongside homemade cakes and retro chocolate. Alternative spots for a drink are next door to GOJ with the Wild Card Brewery on one side and Mother’s Ruin on the other, a cute-looking ‘tea room’ serving fruit liqueurs made using locally grown or foraged fruits from East London (we spotted sloe or damson gin, elderflower vodka, rhubarb and ginger liqueur; next time, next time…).

You’ll find God’s Own Junkyard on Ravenswood Industrial Estate, Walthamstow E17; it’s open Friday and Saturday 11am to 9pm, and Sunday 11am to 6pm. Visit godsownjunkyard.co.uk.
