WLM’s Top 20 Portrait Photographers: Olivia Shaw

Talented portrait photographer Olivia Shaw, is based in Richmond. She has always had a passion for working with people and her natural and friendly manner ensures her photos show someone’s real character. She particularly loves working with your little ones to create beautiful portraits, in their own environment where they are happy and relaxed. She aims to capture their real personalities in a photo to treasure forever.

How long have you been a photographer?
I graduated from Portsmouth University in 2006 with a BA Hons in Photography, and ventured straight into the world of freelance photography!  I was delighted to find myself really busy, initially focusing on portraits in the music business.  At the same time I started to take on weddings and baby photography, which I thoroughly enjoy. It gives me the opportunity to shoot in different styles and work within a completely different environment.

What got you into photography?
From a young age I was lucky enough to travel extensively and through that I discovered my love of meeting many different people and documenting the trips through photography. I soon learnt that I might be able to take this further and that people felt at ease in front of my camera enabling me to capture a great portrayal of them in an image.

Which photographer do you look up to and why?
This is always a difficult question as so many photographers influence me for different reasons. Steve McCurry was my first inspiration; his truly beautiful and colourful portraits from around the world are incredibly striking and always spoke to me. His subjects of all ages and cultures look relaxed in front of the camera and his ability to connect with people shines through. Mario Testino is another favourite, for his stunning bold portraits of some of the most iconic people in the world. I particularly love his use of natural light.

What do you prefer film or digital?
This is tricky as everything I do now is digital, which I love. However it took a while for me to get used to the change from film. I don’t think I would be where I am now if I hadn’t learnt the full mechanics of how to fully use a medium format film camera. With only having around 10 exposures on a roll of film it teaches you to be very precise with every shot you take. This has been a useful lesson in my career.

What should your customers expect during a session?
When arranging a shoot we will have a chat about what you would like to achieve and decide whether I should come to your home or meet at a chosen location, to ensure everyone is relaxed and happy. I will aim to shoot for about 2 hours or until I feel that I’ve got the right images. I feel it is especially important when capturing children that they are at ease. I aim for a fun and easy experience for all involved!

Do you have any tips for capturing the perfect picture?
When photographing anyone, whether it be a baby, celebrity, or CEO of a company, I believe the most important thing is to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. I recommend building a rapport with your subject as quickly as possible. And of course, make sure the light is right! I prefer natural light for children and family portraits, as it is less intrusive and more comfortable for the person being photographed.
