Summer in London: Science Camps

MadScience

by Anna Scott

This week we’ve brought you arts and crafts, sport, mixed-activity camps and performing arts, but it’s not all about the call of the stage or the adrenalin rush of scoring the winning goal—science camps are growing in popularity too. Thanks to the classes’ educational nature, you could be giving your kid a leg up once back in school. So whether it’s computer coding or ecology that interests them, our final summer camps and courses posting offers some ideas to bring out their scientist side:

Fire Tech Camp, South Kensington

Offering courses and workshops in the world-renowned environment that is Imperial College, Fire Tech Camp covers everything from video game design to computer coding. This is a great opportunity for older kids who are serious about their technology and gadgets. Classes include “Rapid Prototyping: Intro to Making and 3D Printing” and “Robotics with Lego Mindstorms”—cool stuff.

Mad Science Summer Camps, various locations

Gross them out with “Blood, Bones & Bacteria” or wow them with “Rockets and Rotorblades”. Mad Science runs summer camps with a range of fun topics for ages 4 to 11. West London locations include Isleworth, Wimbledon and Ealing, with courses over four or five days.

Hammersmith Community Gardens Environmental Playschemes, Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush

One for all the family to enjoy: Hammersmith Community Gardens Association run various events over the school holidays that allow children and their parents and carers to participate in outdoor gardening and environmental activities. You can stay for all or part of the day, joining in with pond-dipping, insect hunts and crafts.

FunTech, Richmond

From coding to Minecraft, Funtech summer camps offer children the opportunity to learn about the invaluable world of computer science in a fun setting. Courses run for a week in various spots across London. In addition to day camps, FunTech have just launched away-from-home camps in Kent, suitable for children from ages 7 to 16, that combine coding and sports as well as other activities.

Mother Nature Science Summer Camps, various locations

Running in Fulham, Maida Vale, Ealing, Kew, and several other locations, Mother Nature Science is for children aged 5 to 12. Kids get to both make and take home their experiments. The camps involve gravity racers, water launching rockets, and slime. Need we say more?
