If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. If you know where to look and you’re wandering around east Greenwich, that is…
Tucked away at the top of a residential street and down a shaded path, wanderers in the lesser-frequented east side of Royal Greenwich will find the woodland wonder of East Greenwich Pleasaunce.
Dating back hundreds of years, this hidden Green Flag award winning park is a welcome sight for families at any time of year. Head here for the park, playground or football pitch and you’ll return again and again for the brilliant stay-and-play sessions at The Bridge, a hearty welcome at the baby-friendly cafe and the thought-provoking historic naval cemetery (around 3,000 sailors who spent their last days at the local Royal Hospital Greenwich are buried here).
Many families head to the Pleasaunce’s grander neighbour Greenwich Park, but the beauty of East Greenwich Pleasaunce is in its hidden gem status. Though there’s loads for kids to do, it’s never overcrowded – even on a hot summer’s day.
You can while away a nap time just meandering through the fruit orchard reading the heartrending epitaphs on the headstones. Or make a full day of it with a play session at The Bridge followed by lunch in the eco-friendly cafe Pistachios in the Park.
The Bridge is a community hub with children at its heart. There are kids’ activities every weekday to get involved in. Fancy the sound of gardening club, mini forest school or toddler football? If you don’t want to book a dedicated class, stay and play is just £2 per family and features indoor soft play and a more adventurous outdoor playground all within a safe, enclosed space. All events, including yoga classes for adults, are listed on the online calendar.
When you’re ready for a caffeine hit, Pistachios in the Park has you covered. The cafe offers outdoor seating that takes advantage of the tranquil woodland setting and impressive views towards Canary Wharf, plus there are toys and books galore to keep little ones entertained. The cafe also plays host to various family events throughout the year, check out their website for more information.
So whether you’re an SE10 local or you’re heading to Greenwich for a family day out, don’t miss the family-friendly fun on offer in East Greenwich Pleasaunce.
