Moochic Baby is a line of sleepwear and bedding started by friends Yuva and Aneesa. When they had their own children, the pair were uninspired by the products on the market as well as the price tag that went along with them so they decided to create an alternative, that is not only affordable but also timeless and can be passed down to future generations. The range consists of 100% cotton super soft quilts, swaddle blankets, pj’s and babychiefs. Each item is handmade in India using block prints that have been in Yuva’s family for generations. The line adds a dash of colour and playfulness to any nursery.
WLM recently caught up with Yuva and Aneesa:
What inspired you to start Moochic Baby?
Being mums to kids under 5, we were stunned at how expensive children’s cotton bedding and nightwear is in the UK. We did some research and had some conversations with Yuva’s family in India who have been producing hand block printed cotton garments and lifestyle products for over 5 decades now. Some ideas were floated and the first collection of MoochicBaby was born !
What challenges have you faced?
We’ve been blessed with the most receptive clientele any new business could hope for. The biggest challenge has been living up to their expectations and continuing to develop and grow our collection to include other products of equivalently high quality while maintaining a competitive price. Also, as all of our products are hand made over 5000 miles away, we cannot always meet specific requests from customers for a particular print.
What advice would you give new mumpreneaurs?
Organisation is the key! Keep a written record of every little thing you do, boring jobs like accounts and cash flow management can get out of hand in a matter of days!
What advice do you wish you listened to?
We wish we’d listened to advice to start this business earlier!
What’s your favourite book to read your child?
Yuva’s daughter, Ahana, is 2 and their current favourite book is “Hippo has a Hat” which features animals in a shop, trying different clothes on (Ahana informed Yuva last week that she loves shopping, we have NO idea who she has been talking to!!)
Aneesa’s daughter, Ayaana, has just turned 4 and their regular read at the moment is “The Snowman”. They met the Snowman over the holidays at their local Waterstones and Ayaana cornered him to ask him why his nose was an orange and not a carrot!
What’s your favourite kids shop in west London?
We are both big fans of Huggle—it has an amazing range of products, the prices are realistic and the staff are knowledgeable about the products they sell and are so friendly!
What’s your favourite shop in west London?
We both do the majority of our shopping online now. Notonthehighstreet.com has an amazing range of unique products and we generally find something to buy every time we visit.
Where do you and your family like to hang out?
Little Rascals in Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, Paddington Recreation Ground (the cafe does great pizza!) and St Johns Wood High Street kiddy park!
Noteworthly: Moochic Baby is currently having a fab sale!
