Eat in west London: La Petite Bretagne, Hammersmith

I seem to have been remarkably lucky with every new eatery visited recently. I don’t know why I’m so surprised, but it’s easy to become cynical when confronted with so many poor experiences in the past. However, I’m pleased to announce that my good run is continuing with my visit to La Petite Bretagne, a small outfit selling mouth-watering crepes (a crepery?) and that all important cup of accompanying coffee.

One of my worries about trying somewhere new is that I’m not going to get great value for money. Eating out, whether it’s a full on three course meal or a mid-morning pastry, isn’t a regular occurrence. I get a bit resentful when I fork out cash for something that just isn’t really worth it and the thought of a crepe is a nice one, but it’s never been top of my list. But La Petite Bretagne is something a bit special. Situated in Beadon Road, off Lyric Square and opposite the Hammersmith and City line station, it specialises in selling crepes and crepes alone (apart from the aforementioned coffee and some deli extras) and it appears to take great pride in getting them spot on. And when visiting a crepe specialist, what else could I order other than one with sugar and lemon? There is no better way to judge a crepe. But I needn’t have had any worries, because it was delicious. I even slightly regretted my choice when I tried the other half’s Nutella and banana one. The only downside was the view of the building works opposite, which isn’t really much not get annoyed about in the whole scheme of things.

You might remember me mentioning the coffee (several times)… Well, they get this right too. Perfect, in fact. Which brings me onto another great thing about this place – the price. We popped along after the school drop-off and were pleasantly surprised to find that if you order before 11am, you get a free coffee with every crepe ordered. So that brought our two sweet crepes and two large coffees in at under £8. Not too shabby. Next time we’re going to go the whole hog and get a couple of savoury ones.

So if you’re staying out for some post-school run refreshment in the vicinity of King Street, eschew the coffee chains with their pricey beverages and slightly stale muffins and take a walk down this side street. And you needn’t worry about gluten, if you do worry about that sort of thing. Because they’re made with buckwheat flour, so are completely devoid of the stuff.
