Dee Light: A Kid-friendly Bakery in Balham
By Jennifer Barton
This Balham bakery and café with outdoor seating, a spacious interior and the yummiest peanut butter brownies in existence already sounds appealing enough to tempt any parents with toddlers who happen to be passing by.

It’s only when you peek around the corner, however, that you see Dee Light Bakery might just be the best Balham destination to pop into with a little one, and just where to park yourself for the better part of a morning or afternoon (especially if you need to send an emergency work email and have no childcare).
In the back, there’s a sweet little play space catering to babies and toddlers, so kids can play while parents sip a coffee or tuck into a pastry (of course, you can also hang out in there with the kiddos). There’s plenty for them to play with, from wooden activity games to LEGO walls, a mini chalkboard, dolls, cars, cuddly toys, books and even wagons to push around.
Dee Light caters to customers looking for tasty coffee all day, breakfast, lunch (think paninis, salads and quiches) and afternoon tea, as well as anyone who might need cake at any hour of the day – AKA every newish parent. Being an Australian-owned bakery, it’s no surprise to also find Antipodean specialties like Lamingtons and Anzac biscuits – yum.

Even better? Not only is Dee Light a great choice when you need a bespoke birthday cake for your next kids’ party, it’s also a fantastic (and reasonably priced) destination for anyone looking for a party locale for kids 4 and older.
Younger kids can book in for a pizza and animal modelling party, children 9+ can enjoy pizza and cupcake piping, while the 11+ crowd can focus on more sophisticated cake decorating and modelling, creating dragons, festive characters or animal scenes. Party costs start at £25 per person.
