Top Portrait Photographers 2012

Over the last couple months we’ve been asking you to nominate your favourite portrait photographer.  With the help of the folks at Time for Mums, we’ve waded through all the family portraits and cute newborn pictures to narrow it down.  It was a tough job— but someone had to do it!  Choosing the right person to photograph your family can be a tough decision, hopefully we can help you find the right match.

This year we’re shaking things up and asking you—our fabulous readers to vote for your favourite photographer.  Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be showcasing the nominees and finally opening up the polls for you to vote.  You can check out last weeks nominees here.

The final nominees are: Kitty Phillips and Jo Campbell.  Next week the voting will open—please cast your vote for your favourite!

KITTY PHILLIPS

Kitty set up her photography business in 2007, turning her lifelong passion for photography into a career.  From the age of 7, when she was given her first camera —a Polaroid and through her time in the airline industry, traveling the world Kitty, has built a portfolio of striking images of people.

To develop her craft skills, Kitty worked as an assistant to professional photographers on advertising, portraiture, lifestyle shoots, and even the odd food shoot.  With this grounding Kitty has the technical skills to be able to achieve a range of effects and moods — with either natural light or enhanced with studio lighting.

When shooting children, Kitty’s approach is to keep things relaxed and authentic.  Children feel more at ease in their own surroundings which translates into more natural shots. Kitty therefore tends to spend time with the children getting to know them — sharing what they are playing with or something that excites them before the camera comes out of the bag.  Shooting only one session a day means that sessions are relaxed and fun, and flexible in working around the children’s moods and nap times.

JO CAMPBELL

Jo Campbell is a portrait photographer based in Kingston upon Thames who specialises in bump, baby, children and family photography. All the work she does is on location, using natural light, although she does do occasional studio shoots. “My style is relaxed and my aim is to capture the beauty and personality of whoever is in front of my lens. Usually this ends up with me running round a garden or park while brandishing my camera, but this is the best way of getting the sort of photos that parents love which show a child’s natural expressions rather than their best ‘photo face’.”

Jo always has her camera on hand ready to capture any moment, “some of my most treasured possessions are photographs of loved ones and past happy times,” says Jo.  Her own love of photography really took off 10 years ago when she became a mum. Since then she came to realise that in the blink of an eye your chubby little armful of cuddles has turned into a very busy and important nine-year-old. “I treasure the fleeting moments captured in a photo such as a tiny foot, a gappy-toothed grin or a dimpled cheek and I love being able to present clients with a set of photos that freeze those precious moments in time.”
