We’ve all faced what seems to be never ending stairs at most tube stations across London. Luckily, the generosity of most strangers prevails and buggies are often carried up or down the endless steps. Imagine the scenario for the elderly, people with limited mobility or in wheelchairs?
One group really pushing for an all access station is The Exhibition Road Cultural Group (ERCG), who are petitioning to make South Kensington accessible for everyone. There is currently a Step Free Access Campaign, set up by the ERCG, which comprises of the largest cultural and academic institutions all located nearby, such as: Imperial College London, Royal Albert Hall, Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum just to name a few…
Exhibition Road is a cultural hub in London and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Sadly though, South Kensington tube station, which is the main tube servicing Exhibition Road is not step free. This results in a huge challenge for visitors with limited mobility, wheelchair users or for parents with buggies. TFL’s plans to make South Kensington accessible have been put on hold until 2018. That is too long a wait.
