I don’t think I could have got through the last nine years of motherhood without my evening glass of wine.

A scary admission I know (and perhaps not the best example to set to new young mothers out there) but there it is I’m afraid.  In fact I know very few mothers who haven’t reached for the bottle at precisely 7.01pm when the children are in bed for that one transitional, decompressing glass.

As I write this, my children are tearing around my legs, screaming their heads off and I am already dreaming about that delicious moment.  So when I heard about this book – the Knackered Mother’s Wine Club I had to get hold of a copy.  After all if we’re going to do it, we might as well drink the decent stuff.

westlondonmum.co.ukWell so thinks ex-wine buyer and mother of three Helen McGinn.  Following on from her eponymous blog, her new book seamlessly blends her extensive experience buying wine for a major supermarket with that of the daily stresses of life raising three small children.  It’s a down to earth, irreverent super funny guide on how to buy good wine which reaches out to all frazzled mummies out there.

She de-mystifies that all too familiar ‘wall of wine’ in the supermarket, explains your ‘fridge-door whites’ from your ‘in-the-rack reds’ all presented in a smart back to (wine) school type format.  Take note – this is not for wine aficionados.  I could not give this book to my sister-in-law who is a wine connoisseur, but if like me you don’t really know your Pinot Noir from your Malbec or just want to serve decent wine to your mates, your book club or even to impress your husband, then this is the book for you.

As well as succinctly explaining the difference between all the grape varieties, Helen tells us everything about wine from what to serve with apple crumble to what constitutes a really good Burgundy for a landmark birthday present.  She tells the real truth behind screw caps and confirms that we will soon all be buying Chinese wine.

The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club is available at all good book shops and on Amazon.
