Don’t know your SnapChat from your What’s App? According to Ofcom, 93 percent of all 5 to 15-year-olds used the internet in 2013, and more than a third of them have a profile on a social networking site. However, nearly half of parents report feeling their kids know more about the internet than they do.

Not only do we worry about our children in the ‘real’ world, now we have the addition of worrying about them in the cyberspace. Staying on top of everything can be a daunting task. Threats to them include cyber bullying, sexual predators and fraud.

Protecting them and ensuring their digital footprint is contained starts with us. From the first sonogram picture posted on Facebook to that cute little snap of junior in their nappy on Instagram. It’s time to start thinking about the online presence we are creating for our children before they’ve even reached the age of one, and ensuring once they start to navigate the net on their own they are armed with the proper tools and knowledge.

Our next event on Wednesday 5th November in Chiswick at the Barley Mow Centre is all about online safety and children with Online Safety Expert Tony Anscombe from AVG Technologies.

We’ll discuss:

  • Where does your content/your kids content go online?
  • Who owns it and what are your rights?
  • How can a tweet/social media post help cyber criminals build up a profile of you?
  • Geo Tagging – what is it and why should I care?

Expert attendees include:

Tony Anscombe, Online Safety Expert, AVG Technologies
Charlie Sanchez, Content Specialist, AVG Technologies
Fiona Buckley, AVG Technologies
Rebecca Lake, AVG Technologies
Elena Martellazzo, Criminologist (TBC)

Each guest will leave with a copy of Tony’s book ‘One Parent to Another’ and Magda & Mo colouring books for the kids.
