Meet the Teacher: Joanna Riley of Massage-4-Life

Joanna Riley is a qualified massage therapist who trained at the London College of Massage as well as teacher of baby massage.   She holds regular baby massage classes at Izzy Jones and at the Alice House in Queen’s Park.  WLM recently caught up with her to find out about the benefits of massage for babies and adults.

Tell us about Massage-4-Life…
I set up Massage-4-Life on July 4th, 2011.  I am a qualified practitioner of Swedish/Deep Tissue Massage as well as hot stone, Chinese Cupping, pre and post-natal massage and a teacher in baby massage. I also freelance at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios.  In this modern, fast moving and stressful life, it is important to take time out to relax. There is no better way to completely calm, soothe and relax yourself than with a massage.

I have huge job satisfaction.  I meet so many different people that have different reasons for a massage.  Whether it’s just for complete relaxation or deep tissue massage as a result of working out.  No massage is the same and therefore every massage is adapted to suit the clients needs.

What inspired you to start teaching baby massage?
I am very passionate about massaging and the great benefits everyone can gain from it. I started working with pregnancy clients and a few asked about baby massage. When I looked into training to become a teacher in baby massage,  I discovered that the benefits were vast; especially with colic, digestion and bonding.

What benefits does massage have on babies?
Baby massage workshops are fabulous.  It’s a great way to start the bonding process between parent and baby. Babies respond very quickly to the massage and really enjoy the time. Massage has many benefits, such as:

  • Improves the immune system
  • Helps the infant to relax
  • Promotes sounder and longer sleep
  • Promotes bonding (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Regulates digestive, respiratory, circulatory systems
  • Relieves pain/discomfort from gas, colic, congestion
  • Helps the production of endorphins and relieves stress

What age range is baby massage best for?
Baby massage works best on babies from newborn and up to 1 year.
