For anyone lamenting the lack of small businesses and interpersonal communication on London’s high streets, we’d recommend booking into Sally’s on Northcote Road for your child’s first haircut (and every subsequent one after), where hairdresser Sally’s decades of expertise and wonderful demeanour with children and parents turns the stressful prospect of a haircut into a gorgeous morning of chatting and giggling.

Sally’s isn’t a salon, it’s a Northcote Road institution. Sally has been a hairstylist for over 40 years, exclusively focused on children’s hairdressing for over 30, and her charming salon with hairbrush display in the window has been a fixture on the Northcote Road since 2006.

The entire space is designed invitingly, so that you can relax with your whole brood (including your pet pooch) for a morning of cuts and play: there’s a wooden toy kitchen, a wooden toy box with diggers and cars, baby toys and – crucially for the child getting their hair cut – a television where they can watch their favourite Peppa Pig episodes. Adorning the walls are prints and photographs of children taken by local photographers.

What keeps parents coming back to Sally’s – even after they’ve moved out of London – isn’t just how good their child’s hair looks, but how Sally can make both children and parents feel at ease, helping kids conquer their fears of being in the salon seat with her infinite patience and helpful tips (if you want them).

Sally’s legions of five-star reviewers all say the same thing: she can cut hair even while children are playing with toys, wriggling, screaming or crying. Sally is also conscious of the extra support special needs children require when getting a haircut (she has a teaching certificate to support children with learning difficulties), and ensures the salon environment is as relaxing as possible for them.
Prices at Sally’s vary depending on what you’re after, starting with a £6 fringe trim through to £20 for a wash and cut for children five years and older. Cuts for kids under two are £14. The salon is also well stocked with kids’ hairbrushes from Tangle Teezer and Rock & Ruddle, shampoos, hair styling products and bows and accessories. Those coming for their first cut get a certificate to bring home – and often a small bag of hair.

Book in advance as we haven’t once passed Sally’s shopfront and not seen a happy customer in the chair – with two other families waiting. You can book online here.
