Renowned for its independent productions and locally inspired, gut-busting Christmas pantos, the Lyric in Hammersmith has garnered much love from the west London community as the go-to venue for theatre. However, what it’s less known for is the amazing array of classes available for young people aged 5 to 25.
With a recent renovation complete, the building has state-of-the-art facilities for kids to gain hands-on experience under the umbrella of a functioning theatre. Classes range from music and dance to computer coding and drama, where children can learn folk music or hip-hop dance moves, to create their own game or to develop their performance skills.
In addition to term classes, there are one-day Masterclass sessions in collaboration with other industry leaders such as the DanceWest Masterclass, which offers young people an exciting opportunity to work with the UK’s leading choreographers and find out what it takes to work in the industry. For film buffs, the Make a Film in a Day Masterclass with TEAfilms is essential: children learn about lighting, sound, camera and editing skills as they create their own short film.
The Lyric’s mandate is to make the arts affordable to all members of the community, so term classes are only £35 and Masterclasses are £10. All participants also pay a one-time fee of £10 to become a Lyric Young Company member.
