I’m always looking for new places to try out with the kids because there are only so many times I can handle Pizza Express. There’s nothing better than dining at a restaurant that caters to kids but sometimes it’s nice to change it up to somewhere with an atmosphere other than rowdy children. Everyone in this household loves sushi and when several of my friends recommended Sticks ‘n’ Sushi in Wimbledon I definitely wanted to check it out.

We tried a couple of times to head over last minute for an early dinner but the tables were always booked. So one cold and rainy Sunday we checked online and there were plenty of tables available for lunch—we headed straight to Wimbledon. (That’s another problem in this house: getting out of our comfort zone in SW6!) I recommend booking a table online before you go. Sticks ‘n’ Sushi is a restaurant group from Denmark with two locations in London, Wimbledon and Covent Garden. I love the decor and ambiance, the sleek Danish-style furniture mixed with Japanese influences. This is somewhere you can come as a family or a night out with drinks and delicious food.

The hardest part of the meal was trying to decide what we wanted to eat—it took us ages to order. We were presented with two menus (set and a la carte) that were loaded with images that got us salivating. Once you flip through the menu it’s pretty obvious where the name Sticks ‘n’ Sushi comes from. They specialize in yakitori, skewers from the grill, which the kids all love. There’s nothing more exciting than food on sticks—my son kept asking if he could bring the sticks home! We simply could not make up our minds and that’s where the set menu came in handy. The portions in the set menu are generous and the fish is super fresh and from sustainable sources. The waiter was there the whole time holding our hands and guiding us through the menu, which was really helpful.

The kids’ menu has a pretty well-balanced selection and is sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. The presentation in the bento boxes with yakitori skewers is fun and my kids really enjoyed their lunch. Another thing I liked about our meal is that the water (still/gently sparkling) Sticks ‘n’ Sushi serve is filtered, thus minimizing the waste from bottles. Moreover, 10 percent of the water sales is donated to Friends International, who help get children in Cambodia off the streets and work experience in the kitchen. It’s really nice to dine somewhere that is socially and environmentally conscious.

My four-year-old son has officially declared this his favourite restaurant in London. I highly recommend checking out Sticks ‘n’ Sushi for a great family meal or a fun grown-up night out.
