Eat: Farmers’ Market at a school near you

FarmersMarket

Partake in a slower-paced, more enjoyable and delicious version of the school run at a weekend school-based famers’ market. (And in case your kids moan about going to school on a weekend, you can tell them eating and shopping locally is a good way to celebrate upcoming Earth Day.) Here are a handful of places to pick up fresh produce on the playground:

At Wendell Primary School in Shepherds Bush, City & Country Farmers have just set up a new weekly market beginning this Sunday, the 17th of April, from 10am to 3pm. You’ll find handmade crafts and community stalls along with fruit and veg, meat, freshly pressed juices, pies, honey, free range eggs, fish and delicious hot food made from locally sourced ingredients. If you fancy setting up your own stall, discounts are available for local residents. The school is on Cobbold Road, W12 9LB.

Over at Belmont Primary School in Chiswick, another new market is starting up this weekend: the High Road Market begins on the 16th and features farmers’ market staples plus coffee, wine and craft beer. Open Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, the market is just off Chiswick High Road on 1 Belmont Road, W4 5UL.

Last June saw the start of the West Hill Farmers’ Market at West Hill Primary, easily accessible from both Putney and Wandsworth and with free parking into the bargain. The market runs on Sundays from 10am to 2pm and includes a range of stallholders from Bad Ass Cakes to the Garlic Farm, from Seriously Italian to Wagay Ethiopian Coffee, and this weekend features a plant fair. Find the market on Merton Road, SW18 5ST.

For years the Queen’s Park Farmers’ Market has been offering tasty, locally produced food at Salusbury Primary School on Sundays from 10am to 2pm. Visit the Tomato Stall, Moreton Mushrooms, Spice Caravan or Ted’s Veg. Head over to the school on Salusbury Road, NW6 6RG.

On Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, Brook Green Market & Kitchen hosts its market at Addison Primary School. Alongside the glorious fruit and veg and street food, the market runs ‘Interactive Food Demos’ in which you can learn classic cooking techniques using the market’s seasonal produce. The school is on Addison Gardens, W14 0DT.
