5 Things to Do in London This Christmas Week

The-Muppet-Christmas-Carol

Home for the holidays? Here are some ways to keep your kids—and you—content.

  1. Head to the Southbank Centre. The Winter Market is running until the 24th of December, so you have a few more days to get those last-minute gifts. Join in (or just enjoy watching) the BUMP Rollerdisco, or hoist a pint at the Scandinavian pop-up bar Rekorderlig Cider Lodge.
  2. Experience Christmas by Candlelight at the Charles Dickens Museum, or, with kids ages 12 and up, see a performance of A Christmas Carol (£22, showing Monday the 21st, Tuesday the 22nd, Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th at 3:30 and 6:30pm, and on Sunday the 27th at 3:30 and 6pm).
  3. For younger kids, see a showing of The Muppet Christmas Carol at the Museum of Childhood (Monday the 21st of December—that’s tomorrow, though tickets were still available at time of posting—at 2:30pm for £3). Child-friendly films later this month, all showing at 2:30pm, are Frozen on the 29th, Toy Story on the 30th, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on the 31st.
  4. Learn ‘the science of Christmas’ with Festive Physics at the Science Museum. You’ll find out how reindeer can fly and what makes Christmas crackers crack. There are several shows a day from now through the 23rd and from the 27th to January 3rd, and the museum stays open until 7pm for the rest of December.
  5. So the weather outside is frightful? Stay home and get the kids in the kitchen. One of the best things about chilly weather (or as close as we seem to be getting to chilly this winter) is warming the house by baking something delicious. The kids can get stuck in making these healthy fruit muffins.
