Book Review: So You Want To Be Captain?

Book Review: So You Want To Be Captain?

Is your child an ‘FEC’ (Future England Captain)? With London going into Olympic overdrive, pitch-side coaching is at an all time high.  When I walked through Ravenscourt Park at the weekend it was full to bursting with children playing football, basketball, tennis and cricket.  Along with the arrival of the Olympic torch on UK soil at the weekend, never has there been a better time to encourage your children to achieve their sporting dreams.

Inspired by his own son becoming captain of the first XV rugby team at school, Shepherds Bush based author Declan Gane came up with the idea for this fantastic new book So You Want to Be Captain? following a fruitless search for motivational sporting advice for the younger generation.  All the books out there were aimed at grown-ups, there was nothing that was inspiring for children.

So together with son Louis, Declan sat down and drew up a list of great captains and outstanding sportsmen and women who have inspired him, writing to them directly to get their top tips.  The response was so overwhelming and the words of wisdom that they received so inspirational, that they decided to compile it all into a book, aimed at children giving them some really useful on and off the field advice.

With incredible soundbites from leading captains in their field such as Michael Vaughan, Phil Neville, Tanni Grey-Thompson and Kelly Holmes this will appeal to all budding sportsmen and women out there, as well as a few competitive Dads!  Whether cricket or cycling or women’s rugby is your thing, there will be something here that inspires you.
